Meet Simone Jacot, a dynamic freshman at the University of Nevada, Reno, and one of the four students chosen to embark on an incredible research journey in Ecuador with the Young Explorers Program of Nevada (YEP-NV)! This summer, she'll dive into interdisciplinary research, exploring indigenous agricultural practices and their impact on nutrition and chronic diseases. As a nutrition major with a passion for community service and international engagement, Simone is thrilled to step out of the U.S. for the first time and embrace this exciting challenge. ​Join Honors College student Paola Miramontes Gonzalez on an unforgettable adventure in Ecuador! As part of the Young Nevada Explorers Program, she delved into exciting ecological research amidst the Amazon’s incredible biodiversity. From canoe trips down the Curaray River to stargazing in the pristine night sky, every moment was a blend of discovery and camaraderie. This summer expedition not only fueled her passion for ecology but also solidified her dream of pursuing a Ph.D. in Environmental Science.

Pre-med student Rayan Laique took a wild leap out of his comfort zone into the heart of the Amazon Rainforest for an unforgettable research adventure with Dr. Lora Richards. Amidst chirping insects and starlit nights, he discovered the rich culture of the Kichwa community and forged friendships despite language barriers. Through challenging fieldwork, from battling tropical ants to hand-washing clothes, Rayan gained a newfound respect for ecology and its global impact. This enlightening journey not only broadened his academic horizons but also left him with irreplaceable memories and invaluable life lessons.

Honors College student Isabelle "Izzy" Dalla embarked on an epic journey to the Amazon Rainforest, assisting Dr. Lora Richards with research on caterpillars and herbivory. Sponsored by the Young Nevada Explorers and an NSF Government Grant, Izzy's adventure included playing cards by candlelight, navigating riverboat rides, and encountering unexpected challenges like a giant fallen tree. This serene and collaborative problem-solving experience inspired Izzy's leadership style, equipping her with invaluable lessons for her future endeavors.
